A Difference of Opinion

Discourse

I have originated a couple social media posts on the subject of the current Supreme Court nominee that question his fitness for the position.

Then I got a message from another alum:

Skip, on your Kavanaugh posts, you keep referencing folks who support him because of Trump. I think that is unfair. I am no fan of Trumps but Kavanaugh is his own person. A bunch of my friends know him and his family and swear he is a wonderful person. I am keeping an open mind each way, but in this time of such bitter animosity on both sides, I am encouraging folks to be civil and to remember these are real people we are talking about. This man has a wife and kids. And as a Country we all need to be careful not to hate each other. We are better than what seems to be happening to us.

My response:

First, Hi, [Xxxxxxxx], and thanks for the note!

Other than suggesting to one woman (who has been spewing extreme rhetoric on my posts) that she “enjoy the Kool-Aid”, I believe I’ve kept my comments fairly civil and straight forward.

I’m sure BK has reformed and grown up in the sense that he’s no longer acting like a frat boy. In that sense, he and I are no different. Sure, we were young, stupid, couldn’t handle alcohol, and did stupid things; now we’re older, married, with family, shouldering responsibilities, and contributing to society. But that’s where the similarities end. While his typical behavior today might be no different than yours or mine – meaning he would probably be welcome at a church social or a backyard barbecue – his past behavior and how he’s mishandling it absolutely discredits him from consideration for one of our nation’s top positions.

I’ll agree with you that it’s terrible that his family gets dragged into it, but I believe that he is the one responsible for this. His sense of entitlement and win-at-any-cost attitude has brought out the worst unintended consequences.

All that being said, I really don’t believe I’ve crossed any lines attacking his supporters or 45’s supporters. Some easily offended people might take umbrage at my latest post, but it was more of an invitation to see another perspective than an attack. I do try to keep things closer to the middle because good rarely comes from either extreme. Nonetheless, I will say that not only do I believe he lacks the character to serve on the Supreme Court, his past positions represent a very dangerous point of view.

Unfortunately, this entire conversation simply highlights just how much work is in front of us should we really want to move our Country forward in this world. And that, my friend, is why I feel so fortunate to be able to spend as much time as I do at our College, working with those at the source of the solution: education.

All the best to you and yours, [Xxxxxxxx]! Hope to see you on campus sooner than later!

Why BK should not serve on the SC
You’d think we are all lawyers…but we’re not
