Swimming with the Sharks

Covid-19

As our Federal, state, and local governments move toward policies to allow for “opening the economy”, are we as citizens prepared?

What is different today – Friday, May 8, 2020 – from a month ago?

  • Are we more or less susceptible to infection if we come in contact with the virus?
  • Are we more or less likely to receive effective medical treatment if infected?
  • Are we more or less likely to recover if infected?
  • Are adequate, consistent, and enforceable measures in place to detect the contagion and mitigate its spread?

Considering the progress made on containing the virus and treating the disease, how do you feel?

  • Do you feel there will be a greater or less risk with more people venturing out?
  • Do you feel that it will be more or less safe for your and your family to venture out?

To me, we are all Tom Hanks in Castaway, trapped on our own deserted islands, except we are also surrounded by sharks. The difference is that instead of simply getting bitten or eaten if attacked, you could bring the shark back onto the island with you where it may feast on your family.

We have two great unknowns:

  1. Will you get bitten?
  2. Will you bring it back?

It would be nice to know that the sea level was dropping and that we could see a clear, shallow way back to the mainland before heading out into the shark infested waters…
